On July 17, 2007, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) formally filed to intervene on behalf of the Vulcan Society in the Department of Justice's lawsuit against the City of New York. That suit charges the Fire Department of New York with discriminatory hiring practices. The City of Chicago's 1995 firefighter exam ranked applicants as highly qualified, qualified, or not qualified based on the results of the test. When it was time to hire applicants, only those people ranked as highly qualified were selected. The impact of the test discriminated against qualified black applicants. As a result of this lawsuit, the City of Chicago will be hiring 111 new black firefighters, as well as paying millions of dollars to black candidates passed over for hiring. In New York City case the ruling by Judge Garaufis found the City of New York had excluded Blacks and Hispanics from the Fire Department for decades, since the 1960's, and called it "a persistent stain on the Fire Department's record."

DEATH PENALTY - Struck down selective death penalty laws! I do support capital punishment (only in regards to treason, espionage and murder). The cases were Indiana v. Edwards and Kennedy v. Louisiana. The Eight Amendment is a protection from cruel and unusual punishment. The ruling was a split thought!

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, PRESS AND SPEECH - Upheld the law to a federal statute prohibiting the "pandering" of child pornography (offering or requesting to transfer, sell, deliver, or trade the items) did not violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, even if a person charged under the code did not in fact possess child pornography which to trade. The cases include United States v. Williams and Davis v. Federal Election Commission. Don't push child porn in the direction of me!
