Arlington Road - Trailer (1999)

Michael Faraday (Jeff Bridges) and his 10 year old son, Grant (Spencer Clark) are both trying to come to terms with the loss two years earlier of Michael's wife, Grant's mother. When they befriend a family from across the road, things seem to get a little better for them. However, as the families become closer, Michael starts having misgivings about Oliver and Cheryl Lang (Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack), and begins investigating them. He soon realises that the Langs are definitely not who they claim to be.

The film is a tense political and psychological thriller, with Michael uncovering more and more about the seemingly innocent family living opposite him on Arlington Road.

My thoughts:

The Moon landings were all recorded in a film studio, the Beatles shot Kennedy and the American government invented Bin Laden. I know all this because I read it on the Internet. I know a lot more too, but I daren't put it here as 'They' are watching me. This movie is about a man's increasing paranoia about the activities of one of his neighbours.

This is a great action thriller. It's also pretty depressing, but sufficiently tense and unpredictable to keep you guessing right up to the end. It certainly kept my attention. But poor Jeff Bridges (who plays the main character Professor Michael Faraday); yesterday I saw him kill himself with a drug overdone and now he has to put up with all this. (By the way that's not the same Michael Faraday as invented the Bunsen burner and messed about with magnets; that would have been really weird.) I can't say much more about it, as if you haven't seen it I don't want to spoilt it.

Recommended for conspiracy theorists; but not recommended for those Americans who will tend to overanalyse it and then apply it to real life.

No cats and no decapitations.

Top badass moment? Faraday giving Tim Robbins' character a good slap. Beating up smug bastards is badass, even if it didn't help much in the end. Most professors probably can't fight like that either. (Years ago I was taught mathematics by a professor with an integral named after him; but I struggle to imagine him in any sort of punch-up.)

8 out of 10.
